Slides (Interpreted by Nancy) by Nancy Kangas

In sun
On cement
You can sleep

In California, everything
seems possible until slowly
you see there is no California

There are sandwiches in the car
But for now: the boy, harnessed
the girl, wrapped
and the misnamed Pacific

My older brother wants what he wants. He puts dibs on the gumdrops.
My younger brother sees a chocolate cat. A chocolate cat!
I want to make the rules. I want the microphone. I want this kingdom
to be inhabited by a citizenry that understands decency.
