When you drop Cheerful Tearful’s arm to her side
water leaks through holes at the bottoms of her eyes.
The fleshy corners of her mouth tug down tight.
She is misery. It is in there deep
even when you rachet her arm up high.
They said YES.
I’m going to be a banker
in the best bank in town.
I was counting cracks
in the ceiling when they called.
I was steeled to walk the haul
but buddy now I’m home.
Nancy Kangas lives in Columbus, Ohio. Her poetry has been published in print and online, and for over a decade she edited Nancy’s Magazine. She writes and draws for Muse magazine, and often teaches poetry in residencies sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. Nancy works as a cut-flower grower, florist and public librarian.
